Know Me:   Jessica Skinner

After spending twenty years in the US Navy as a Hospital Corpsman Chief Petty Officer, I retired and felt a calling to explore further support of helping people and pursued a Master of Social Work. My earlier education with a Bachelor of Science in Health Care Management from Southern Illinois University and a Master of Public Administration from Webster University provided a solid foundation for completion of a Master of Social Work from East Carolina University with a Gerontology Certificate. I am currently licensed as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in North Carolina.

I have a wealth of experience working with clients with complex issues in both the in-home settings and community-based settings. I have experience working with clients with elder issues such as: complex medical conditions, life stage changes, grief, aging issues, anxiety, depression, stress management, and mindfulness. I have experience with hospice and palliative care, end of life issues, chronic health problems, grief, and bereavement. I also have experience with caregiver’s and the stress that can go with that role, which also includes grief, bereavement, stress management, and mindfulness.

Life is a series of changes and cycles. At times it can be hard to navigate all of it at once and we need a bit of extra help to figure it all out. Life stage changes can occur when we change jobs, locations, relationships, and even our own health. Having an outside voice to help navigate these changes is where I strive to help others. You have all the answers within yourself, I am here to help you discover them within yourself.

I believe we all need help at times to help navigate life and spend time working out our emotions and feelings, just as much as our physical health.  This is where therapy helps us grow our feelings and emotions muscles. I also believe we all have strengths and weaknesses, and the therapeutic relationship can help us focus on using our strengths to support our growth. The therapeutic process is a joint endeavor between the client and the clinician that we travel together. Therapeutic approaches that influence my style of practice are trauma informed, family systems, cognitive behavior therapy, narrative therapy, attachment theory, and person-centered.
